Prince George, B.C. – The UNBC Timberwolves men's basketball program is adding another exciting guard to their talented mix. Head coach Todd Jordan announced today that Marcus Nickles (Salmon Arm, B.C.) has committed to the TWolves for the 2024-25 campaign and beyond.
Nickles checks in at 6'2" and earned Salmon Arm Golds MVP honours this season after averaging 28.1 points-per-game along with 4.6 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 3.3 steals for head coach Gene Doray's program. Nickles attended the UNBC Timberwolves Spring ID Camp in mid-April and unsurprisingly, the team and the UNBC campus made a positive impression.
"The culture and the family type setting that they've built made me decide to commit to UNBC," recalled Nickles. "They bring a new approach to winning and I admire how close the team was and they're all super nice guys and I'm excited to be a part of that."
"The campus is beautiful and it's a smaller school with smaller classes which allows you to get to know your professors," added Nickles who plans to study Biology and hopes to one day become a chiropractor once his playing days are done.
Nickles made a strong impression on Coach Jordan at ID Camp, and a number of Jordan's basketball contacts went out of their way to promote Nickles, including former Timberwolf Charles Barton.
"Charles has raved about Marcus and we are definitely glad we brought him up for a visit," explained Jordan. "Marcus shoots the ball extremely well from three, and also has creativity off the dribble. He showed a steady demeanor on the court, and we believe he has a bright future. He had a great camp and we are extremely happy he has decided to commit to our program."
Nickles' drive and passion for the game is evident through both his words and his actions, and he's excited for the challenge and opportunity that the Canada West conference presents.
"I'm super excited to play in Canada West, but it'll be a big jump for me," reflected Nickles. "There will be some challenges as everyone is stronger and quicker and it's more physical. But I'm excited to be playing with the best athletes in Canada."
Leading up to the Fall, Nickles will be spending time in the weight room building muscle, and quickening his shooting release. He'll also be mixing in some golf when time allows.
UNBC Athletics is thrilled to welcome Marcus Nickles to the UNBC Timberwolves family.Â
